Marta left the field in tears after being sent off on what could be her last competitive appearance for Brazil. A 2-0 loss to Spain means they must now wait agonisingly to see if they will go through to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament quarter-finals as one of the two best third-place teams.
Japan made sure they progressed in style, a glorious Hikaru Kitagawa free-kick headlining a 3-1 win over Nigeria, who head home pointless.

Group C
Brazil 0-2 Spain
Goals
Spain scorer: Del Castillo (68), Putellas (90+17)
Both sides had chances aplenty in an exciting first half. Spain started to take control as it went on, and the contest swung solidly in their favour on the cusp of half-time, when Marta was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Olga Carmona. Brazil hung on well, but when goalkeeper Lorena failed to gather a cross, she was punished by Athenea del Castillo. Alexia Putellas made sure of sending Spain to Lyon on maximum points with an excellent strike deep into stoppage time.
Japan 3-1 Nigeria
Goals
Japan scorers: Hamano (22), Tanaka (32), Kitagawa (45+5)
Nigeria scorers: Echegini (42)
Riko Ueki unselfishly presented Maika Hamano with a tap-in to break the deadlock. Mina Tanaka made it two after Ueki’s bullet header had come back off the crossbar, before Jennifer Echegini gave Nigeria hope, playing a crafty one-two with Christy Ucheibe and powering the ball home from outside the box. It was, however, short-lived, as a tremendous Kitagawa free-kick sealed a morale-boosting 3-1 win.
