Lee’s goal cancelled out Song Min-kyu’s fourth minute opener for Dan Petrescu’s team, who also saw Brazilian striker Tiago Orobo miss a 25th minute penalty in a tense first leg encounter.
The two teams will meet again in Ulsan next Wednesday with the winners meeting either Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos or Shandong Taishan from China in the semi-finals next month.
Jeonbuk made the perfect start when Lee Dong-jun latched onto Lee Soo-bin’s quick ball forward from deep inside his own half to scamper down the right and deliver an inviting low cross that Song happily stroked home from just inside the six-yard box.
Moon Seon-min then lashed his effort well wide moments later as Jeonbuk looked to consolidate their strong opening.
Joo Min-kyu’s goal-bound shot was cleared as Ulsan threatened at a 13th minute corner before the visitors were put in serious risk of going further behind when Lee Myung-jae brought down Lee Dong-jun as he met a diagonal ball over the top of the defence.
Tiago stepped up to take the penalty but clipped the top of the crossbar as the Brazilian opted for power over placement to the relief of Jo Hyeon-woo, who had dived to his right.
Kim Jeong-hoon ensured Jeonbuk took their lead into the interval when he turned Um Won-sang’s injury-time effort around his left post after Joo’s flicked header had unlocked the home side’s defence.
Ulsan went closer still six minutes into the second half when Hwang Seok-ho headed narrowly wide with Kim Jeong-hoon well beaten following Seol Young-woo’s out-swinging corner.
Substitute Martin Adam gave Ulsan greater presence in attack following his introduction in the 64th minute, the Hungarian finding Kim Jeong-hoon’s arms from the edge of the area; Park Jin-seob then tested Jo Hyeon-woo at the other end with his strike from distance.
With 13 minutes remaining the visitors claimed the equaliser their improved showing in the second half deserved. A mistake from Jeong Tae-wook gifted possession 10 yards from goal to Lee Myung-jae, who side-stepped the defender to slam the ball into the roof of the net.
Um Won-sang almost gave Ulsan more to celebrate five minutes from time only to shoot across the face of the Jeonbuk goal from wide on the right while Lee Dong-gyeong forced a fine save from Kim Jeong-hoon a minute later as Hong Myung-bo’s side sought the winner.
